My drawings arise from the observation of inner states and physical reactions to the outside world. They are traces of processing: collecting, sorting, translating. Lines, surfaces, and structures follow an inner logic that translates into visibility.
What is often referred to in medical language as a symptom or deviation appears here as an expression of perception and survivability. The drawing becomes a medium that reveals the subtleties of the nervous system—irritations, breaks, pauses, moments of overload. I work with various techniques: stitched lines, collaged fragments, reassembled remnants. Discarded elements that were once considered “not good enough” become carriers of a new order in which the irregular and peculiar retain their value.
The drawing thus understands itself as an organism in process—vulnerable and unruly at the same time, permeable to traces that are not smoothed over but remain. In my art, I combine theory and practice to make complex inner states visible. My works are autobiographical and arise from an intensive observation of my sensory and linguistic perception. I use various media such as drawing, text, sound, and textiles to explore the complexity of language and perception and to make the often invisible nuances audible and visible.

relaxed fabric mind
Mixed Media - Collage DIN A 6 - 2025 Franziske Pätzold
relaxed fabric mind is a series of collaged drawings on paper. The title refers to both a mental and physical state, as well as treating paper as if it were fabric. relaxed fabric mind is a poetic state of pause, of taking a deep breath and drawing strength from an organism. Clear structures without severity, with a playful poetry, take over the organism after SOMETHING has disrupted it. Something that is too big to be fit into a grid was unceremoniously placed into small boxes and overflowing drawers. relaxed fabric mind is the state in which the SOMETHING finds its place, no longer scattered loosely and threatening to swell. The series consists of old, discarded drawings that were sorted out as “not good enough” and are recontextualized through reassembly and the search for the aesthetics of idiosyncrasy (the peculiarity of an organism).
